Update on July 16th – EDL 4 Pigs 4 eva xxx

Further to an article below (view here)

Here’s the latest. Although Portsmouth EDL bragged on their private facebook page that they would no longer have to co-operate with police following the head honcho’s arrest, it appears that in fact they have had their heads right up inside the pigs innards, barely coming up for air.

Although originally the council stated EDL would not be allowed anywhere near the war memorial, they have in fact been granted everything they asked for, including (according to organiser martin ‘jacko’ english) free parking for out of town buses, a full on march and wreath laying ceremony, and enough time to get to the football later.

In other cities, councils & police have diverted the racists out-of-town to car parks where they can rally to their hearts content, unfortunately it seems Portsmouth Police are setting a worrying precedent. In fact, following the organisers boasts that the police stopped them fly posting and did nothing to stop it, you could be forgiven for thinking the police are giving the EDL their full support. (On a more positive note when we went out to take the posters down it seems local residents had already done it!)

Mr Jacko was also in the paper reassuring readers that he is in no way a racist. This contradicts his own advice to travelling Chelsea fans on line this week, in which he offered tips about how to get to the footy afterwards in a taxi driven by a white person (he refer’s to non white drivers as ‘stinkers’, which shows you the play school mentality wer’re dealing with here).

Luckily the EDL threat to the city has sparked a wave of networking and activism. Aside from local groups working together we have forged links with Brighton Anti-fascists who have offered advice, reassurance, and most importantly feet on the street. This trend is hopefully building a decent resistance. If the EDL can get transport to other towns why can’t we? A whole south coast Anti Fascist network should be up and running soon, the first big meeting will probably be in September. In the mean time we will support each other where we can. So it’s off to Plymouth this Saturday to cancel out the Pompey EDL goons travelling down there (maybe we can car share?), and it was going to be Bristol on the 23rd but so far from what I can tell they called it off. (Bristol antifas don’t worry, you can still come here on the 16th!) It’s also going to be good to have a whole southcoast group that will not be confined to working with the police which I think stops UAF in their tracks sometimes (that and their top down approach obviously).

It’s early days & we don’t yet know what actions will happen on the 16th. At the very least we should have a decent presence, we’ll probably have to play it by ear on the day. Plymouth on the other hand is looking like it’s going to be a fucking walk over on saturday!

Most ordinary pompey folk opposed to the fascist parade will be gathering at 12 in the guildhall square for an anti fascist peace vidgil. It is called by the UAF but will be a cross section of interested parties and individuals, so if you want to stay safe attend that.

Updates when we know what the shit is going down. Here’s some pages that might be of interest until then.
